For I have dipped my fingers in the stars, And laughing, spread them to the worlds afar, Touching the eyes of each adult and child, In every city and across the wild, To make them look up at the distant stars. Some fourteen billion eyes I gently mar, So they see the same wonder in the stars That I do. I looked at them and smiled, For I have dipped my fingers in the stars. Checkerbacked birds wail to a werewolf moon, Below a milky spill of jeweléd stars, While a lone wolf, to another croons, A bold and plaintive love song from afar.
